Your statement that baseball is not a team sport is part of the problem today. It seems to indicate that individual performance is more important than team performance. Maybe that's why we have guys now trying to hit the ball out of the yard every AB. The art of team play (bunts, advancing runners, squeeze plays, stolen bases, hit and run) is eroding and instead we have shortstops starting to look like G.I. Joe's hitting 35 HR a year. We have pitchers in the NL looking terrified at the plate and would rather just be an automatic out. I think fans go to the games to see their TEAM win and not just 1 guy hit 2-3 HRs. At the end of the season, how many fans do you think say..."Well, Billy Bob hit 70 HRs, isn't that great. Just too bad our team lost 100 games!" Fans want their team to WIN first and foremost. We have seen that you can spend 175 - 200 million bucks acquiring individual talent and still not have a winning team. Give me 25 guys who don't have fat contracts, are hungry and watch them make a run.

Just come up with a drug policy and enforce it you say. The Players Union WON'T allow it. They DON'T want a drug policy. Its an infringement upon their privacy for Christ's sake. Players will DO IT once they are assured that their value goes up for staying clean and that they are financially rewarded for it, otherwise they probably will resist any efforts at change.
