Tired Relievers
I do remember Mauch pitching people on 2 days rest in '64 - Bunning and Chris Short, I think - but I also remember they lost their last bunch of games to drop the pennant to the Cards. The point about bottom-of-the-rotation starters never pitching a great game or aces never losing, is, I believe, wrong. You're talking about a variability to performance from game to game, which is what makes PB fun. I'm talking about things that just don't happen, I.E. a pitcher facing 31 batters on Tuesday and then pitching a great game for 27 more two days later.
You're talking about allowing the improbable, I'm talking about preventing the impossible.
