earned runs vs unearned runs....
I know this sounds like a simple question, but what actually constitutes an unearned run? Isn't it when an error causes runs to be scored that should not have scored? If that is true (which I think it is), then the how many runs are actually earned in the following sequence: E3, FC 1-4, BB, RBI 2B, RBI 4-3, 2RBI HR, 6-3. As I see it, the E3 should have been out #1, the FC 1-4 out #2, then the BB, the RBI 2B (could still have been so, but as the game played the runner on 1st stopped at 3rd so it might not have been an RBI 2B), the RBI 4-3 would not have an RBI but would have been the 3rd out and every run scored after this would be unearned. Thus, if I have interpreted the rule correctly, the most possible runs that are earned is 1 with 3 unearned runs with the possibility of all 4 runs being unearned.
Now, after saying all this, this is what happened in a game I played and the stats had all 4 runs as being earned. I don't understand why or how that could be true unless the game is padding some stats. Can anyone explain this to me please?
