LL yes - free months - no
It seems to me that the type of owners who play in a launch league and then decide to join are the owners who stick around. They've tried the game and like it.
If you instead let them take over a regular team (or draft one), many of the new players (just like in launch leagues) will decide to try it and after even a few weeks quit managing their team, but the team won't be listed as unmanaged and will end up severely overused.
That doesn't even touch the problem that would occur with trades. Someone just coming in for a few months wouldn't be at all concerned about long term. And if instead those trades weren't approved, imagine the howling.
Launch Leagues are a great way to introduce new players and then the ones that like the game will want a perpetual team and the rest will go on to some other activity.
It's too bad the Launch Leagues were ever dropped. Was it technical or just time constraints?
