I'm far from being a baseball purist. My motivation for playing this game is much the same as yours. I've argued that there is nothing wrong with using your roster in and unconventional way if you can get more from your players that way. I think that people should manage thier teams the way they think best. If the powers that be think a certain practice is unfair or detracts from the realism of the game then a change should be made to prevent such action. If you don't make a change, then you are accepting the flaw as a part of the game.
