E-mail communication concerning your team's current agenda can go a long way to making the trading process less adversary. You may think you understand the motives of the other manager, but you may not. I agree with the process of using the preliminary e-mail first. There are thieves out there, however, and a quick declination of the trade without comment gets the message across just as loud and clear.
