The idea that only founders can play for next year is hogwash

Posted By Tim Alt

I feel that an owner that strives to be succesful over the long term should consider the long term ramifications of their drafts and trades regardless of how many teams they own.

An owner who insists on always using their early 1st round pick to fill a hole for the current year, without consideration of long term potential, is probably in the minority and likely lacks understanding of the "big picture." The first year that I owned a perpetual team I made the mistake of drafting to fill holes. I learned from my mistake, moved on, and have had a lot of success since then.

I am a founder, but if I had to cut back from 6 teams to 3 it would not change the way I manage the team. I would still try to use the rookie drafts and trades to build a solid core for the long term and fill in holes in the FA draft when needed.

I don't want to get into the pros and cons of founder pricing because (1) I just don't care about that any more, (2) it really has nothing to do with the subject at hand. In my opinion, a the way that good GM runs his or her team is not impacted by the founder status.
